Tessellations

Tessellation’s feature a single shape that is cut and duplicated, then arranged in an interlocking manner to create a repeating pattern.  They feature Danish Oil rubbed Cedar or Pine along with painted pine as a contrast.  Our two main patterns are the Qbert and the Rosie.

Cedar | Grey | Mint (1)  This “mini” is only 10×12 inches so those tiny diamonds were quite a challenge to cut, paint and arrange!  This piece is offered for $60.

Reclaimed Pallet Wood | Wine | Silver (1)  The reclaimed pallet wood was planed down to achieve a very smooth finish and we were surprised to see the awesome grain in these pieces.  This Qbert is approximately 18×20 inches and is offered for $60.

Reclaimed Pallet Wood | Blue | Light Green (1)  The reclaimed pallet wood was left rough for a rustic feel, but the design of our Qbert pattern adds a modern feel as well. This piece is approximately 18×23 inches and is offered for $80.

Reclaimed Pallet Wood | Mint | Silver (0)  This Rosie has recently sold, but we would be glad to make you one with a 10 day lead time.  This Rosie is approximately 18×24 inches and is offered for $80.

Geometric Wall Art

These geometric pieces may not be tessellations, but we still love making them.

Pine | Ombre Teal (1)  This is one of our only pieces that does not feature woodgrain in the main design, so we added a natural frame!  This piece is 14×22 inches and is offered for $60.

Cedar | Oak | Ombre Teal (0) This large piece has recently sold, but we would be glad to make you one with a 10 day lead time.  This piece is approximately 24×36 inches and is offered for $100.

Other Home Items

These pine hand painted pencils offer some whimsy on a teacher’s desk, or storage for a children’s coloring corner.  The pencils are approximately 11 inches and are offered for $15.

Pencil or Crayon Holder

These stained pine tea light holders have brushed nickel handles.  They are approximately 6 x 14 inches and are offered for $15.  We offer the candleholder in multiple stains but currently have only 2 in oak available, others would require a two week lead time.

Back in the woodshop after our move to Richmond

I recently moved into a new home (and a new state). It has taken some time to get the shop up and running—but things are finally taking shape.

Here’s a video of me re-sawing some rough cut cedar into a beautiful board ready to be planed, then made into something wonderful.

Holiday Gifts = Great Taste Tests and Feedback

We’re just getting things started here at Start Small Sisters, so I wanted to put together a few dog treat gift bags for our family. I know the treats that my dog loves (and won’t touch), so this is an opportunity to see what my dog nieces, nephews, and cousins think.

Banana + Peanut Butter

Banana + Peanut Butter—Everydog’s favorite

These treats seem to be the to pick for most dogs I meet. They’re super crunchy and smell so peanut-y, I even find them hard to resist myself.

Dehydrated Chicken Feet

This is a new item I’m testing out—and Eden is going wild. She had tried some chicken feet at a dog sitter’s home and I was told she loved them. This got me thinking: why not try to dehydrate some chicken feet on my own? I trimmed the chicken nails (they are safe for dogs to eat, just super sharp), placed them on the dehydrator trays, and ran it overnight at 155° F.

Green Beans Crunchies

I’ve seen green beans used in many whole dog food recipes so I thought I’d give dehydrated green beans a try. I tossed the trimmed beans in a drizzle of Olive Oil and placed them on the dehydrator trays. They took about 3 hours to full dehydrate at 135° F.

Eden has given these two paws down. I’m taking the stock over for a family member today, so I will see how her pups like these healthy snacks.

Time to Process the Mint

My farmer’s market had a great deal on organic mint, so I spent the day trimming, washing, chopping, and storing this flavorful herb.

Did you know mint does more than just freshen breath?

Humans and dogs agree that mint helps tame powerful odors, but this herb is also used for many digestive benefits. Just like you warm up a cup of peppermint tea to soothe a stomachache, mint can also benefit your dog’s digestive track. The aromatic peppermint leaf reduces gas, nausea and upset stomach.

We feature mint in a few of our dog treat recipes, including our Mint + Parsley Dog Treats and Apple + Pumpkin Dog Treats.
